The Jewellery Quarter: A world craft city shaped by History

Few neighbourhoods in the world can match the Jewellery Quarter for living history. For over 300 years these streets have hummed to the sound of making jewellery, coins and silverware. It's the site of thousands of inventions and innovations, helping earn Birmingham its reputation as the City of a Thousand Trades. Today, around 700 businesses still produce 40% of all UK jewellery here, and in 2025 the Jewellery Quarter was named a World Craft City, one of only eight in Europe.

The Jewellery Quarter has more open space than you might expect and much of it is hiding plain sight.

The two Historic Cemeteries - Key Hill, once called the “Westminster Abbey of the Midlands” and Warstone Lane with its extraordinary Victorian catacombs are among Birmingham’s most remarkable green spaces.
Peaceful,beautiful and packed with stories, they’re well worth a wander.St Paul’s Square offers a different kind of escape. Georgian elegance, mature trees and one of the finest urban squares in the city.
The canal off Newhall Street opens up a whole network of waterways, walks and wildlife. Along the towpath, volunteer gardeners tend beautiful canal gardens as far as The Roundhouse on both sides of the canal and Gas Street Basin and they’re always looking for new hands. Whether you need fresh air, a quiet moment or a new adventure, it’s all closer than you think.

Over 150 independent retailers, more than 80 bars and restaurants, Michelin starred dining, award-winning bars, museums, galleries and a packed events calendar that includes the annual Beer Weekend and the Christmas Lights switch on.
The Jewellery Quarter never stands still. And of course there’s the jewellery. Nowhere in the UK does it better. Head to theJewellery Quarter Centre for the highest concentration of jewellery shops in the country. Head to St Paul's Square, The Arches, Frederick Street and Pitsford Street for incredible food and drink.

The Jewellery Quarter Business Improvement District(JQBID) plays an essential role in supporting businesses,enhancing the environment and promoting the area, working for the benefit of everyone who lives, works, learns, visits and invests in the Quarter.
