Whether you are settling into a new apartment or you’ve been a local for years and just want to switch up your routine, having a good place to exercise nearby makes all the difference.
Living in an apartment means that getting out to move can be especially important. Fortunately, you don’t need to travel across the city to find a great workout. The Jewellery Quarter and its immediate surroundings have a large choice of fitness spaces, and because the area is relatively small.
Whether you are looking for a quiet space to stretch, a heavy lifting session, or a social group to keep you motivated, here are a few starting points to help you keep moving.
Flexible and 24-hour gyms
If you simply want a straight forward space with plenty of equipment, or if you work irregular shifts and prefer to exercise late at night, there are a couple of commercial options right on your doorstep.
Places like AnytimeFitness down on Newhall Street, and PureGym Snow Hill just on the edge of the neighbourhood, both offer 24 hour access. They are practical, well equipped choices with flexible, rolling contracts, making them ideal if you just want to put your headphones on and get your session done on your own schedule.
Martial Arts and Movement
The Quarter is strong for its variety of independent spaces. If you prefer environments with a bit more character or focused coaching, there is plenty to choose from.
The area is home to some excellent spaces dedicated to martial arts and functional movement. Viela is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu studio that places a strong emphasis on community and is very welcoming to anyone wanting to learn the sport, regardless of their prior experience.
Similarly, the Kaizen Centre offers a broad range of disciplines, from martial arts and self-defence to general movement and wellness classes. These independent spaces are usually deeply community focused, making them a great way to build a new skill while getting to know people in the community.
Yoga, Barre, and Pilates
If you are looking for something focused on flexibility, core strength, or mindful movement, the neighbourhood has some unique options.
Loop Studios is a listed building, it’s a wellness hub that brings together Reformer Pilates, mat Pilates, yoga, and Barre. With its own coffee bar and lounge area, Loop is designed to be as much a social space as it is a fitness studio.
If you prefer a more relaxed approach, look out for Nervous Yoga. They focus on feeling comfortable in your body, calming the nervous system, and building a kinder internal dialogue rather than achieving perfect poses.
Running Clubs and Moving Outdoors
If you find it hard to motivate yourself to exercise alone, joining a local group could be a good option. Running is very popular in the neighbourhood, and you will spot groups heading out on most weekday evenings.
The JQ Run Club (and similar local running groups) are a brilliant addition to the community. Many are completely free, very social, and suit a variety of different paces, from those who want to push their 5k time to those who just want to jog and chat. These runs often start and finish at a local pub or coffee shop, making them an easy, low pressure way to spend an evening.
You also don’t need a membership to stay active here. If you prefer to exercise outdoors, the canal network provides miles of flat, traffic free paths ideal for running, wheeling, or cycling. Dropping down onto the towpath, you can head west straight out to Edgbaston Reservoir for a wide, open loop right by the water, a well used route for locals getting their weekend miles in.
Bouldering and Climbing
If you prefer a workout that tests your problem solving skills as much as your strength, the Birmingham Bouldering Centre is hidden in the old railway arches on Water Street.
You don’t need any experience to go, you can just hire some climbing shoes at the front desk, get a quick safety brief, and head straight onto the beginner routes.
Getting started
There is no single right way to keep fit in the neighbourhood. The best approach is often just to take a look at what is around the corner, sign up for a drop in class or a social run.
