Recycling, Reusing & Getting Rid of Things in the Jewellery Quarter

Keeping the Jewellery Quarter looking its best is a communal responsibility, and knowing how to recycle and dispose of waste will really help.

This Waste and Recycling Guide for Residents provides all the essential information you need, from checking your regular collection schedule and finding the closest Household Recycling Centre, to knowing how to report fly tipping, so you can do your bit in making the JQ a cleaner, tidier place to call home.

My Brum Account

It’s really useful to sign up for a MYBRUM account, which is the council’s portal for lots of services and allows you to find services as well as keep track of any calls you have made.

Waste & Bins

Make sure to use the right bins for waste. Check your property's collection times on the Birmingham City Council website or with your building management company or landlord if it is privately managed.

Bulkier Waste

For large items (e.g., furniture, appliances), you can either book a bulky waste collection service, visit the nearest “tip” (Household Recycling Centre) or visit a Mobile Household Waste Centre.

Details and booking can be found here

Visit the Household Recycling Centre (Tip): For larger loads of waste or items not accepted in household collections, the closest tip is:

  • Perry Barr HRC: Holford Drive, B42 2TU
  • Find other recycling centres: Search and book a slot here
  • Donating items at the tip: Some household recycling centres take donations, including: Furniture, working electrical items, bikes, household goods, tools and bric-a-brac
  • Buying refurbished items at the tip: You can buy items that have been donated and refurbished at the Tyseley HRC Reuse Shop, details can be found here
  • Mobile Household Waste Centres: Mobile collections happen on set dates and times at specific locations you can visit as many times as you like without booking, bringing ID or paying. The closest area to the Jewellery Quarter is Ladywood ward, details and schedules can be found here

Fly Tipping

Fly tipping, or dumping rubbish on the streets is illegal. You can report instances of fly tipping to the council via the MY BRUM portal or Fix My Street to help keep the JQ clean. More information here

  • Request street cleaning/removal of hazardous waste here

Commercial Waste:

If you are a business, you must use a licensed commercial waste collector. Do not use residential bins for commercial waste. Find out more here

Want to help keep the JQ tidy, be outdoors and meet new people?

Litter picking is a great way to meet people, get outside and do something great for the planet. Join the volunteer litter picking group. Details can be found here

Thank you for helping to keep the JQ clean for everyone!
