Supporting Local: Independent Businesses to Explore in the Quarter

One of the best things about living in the Jewellery Quarter is its independence. There is a low number of chain stores here. Instead, the historic streets and old factory buildings are packed with businesses by locals.

It is this independent quality that gives the neighbourhood its character. If you are looking to get out and explore what is on your doorstep, here is a starting point, broken down by how you might spend your day and night.

Daytime: Coffee, Brunch, and Baking

When the sun rises, the Quarter is filled with delicious coffee and bakeries

  • Morning Fuel: If you are looking for a morning coffee or a relaxed weekend brunch, Saint Kitchen right on St Paul’s Square one of the local bakeries. Just a few steps away on the square is Soda Bread Cafe. Both, highly independent, they offer a warm, welcoming atmosphere with totally different styles of menu. Another great stop is Besa on Ludgate Hill, which brings fantastic coffee blends to the area in a beautifully designed space.
  • Baking & Plant-Based Staples: Alterna on Caroline Street is a cosy, entirely plant-based bakery and cafe, a great spot to grab a vegan cinnamon roll or oat latte. The Hive on Vittoria Street, is an organic bakery and a great place to grab a loaf of fresh sourdough while supporting the local community.

Night time: Small Plates, Pints, and Fine Dining

As the jewellers close up shop for the day, the Quarter’s food scene takes over. You don’t need to head into the busy city centre for a great night out, everything from a casual pint to fine dining is within a ten minute walk.

  • Casual Drinks & Dining: 1000 Trades on Frederick Street is housed in what was once a badge factory, they have a rotating kitchen of independent chefs. If you are looking for a sit down dinner, the new restauraunt Vieni at The Goodsyard brings authentic Sicilian cooking to the neighbourhood. For a Spanish inspired inspired night, Txikiteo is a great visit for small plates.
  • Wine & Occasions: For an evening of celebration, the Quarter has some great choices. The Wilderness offers playful, rock-and-roll fine dining that provides one of the most unique tasting menus in the city. If you want a glass of wine and a relaxed vibe, head to Arch 13 at Connolly's on Livery Street. Tucked under the railway arches, this independent wine shop and bar serves a range of wines paired with incredible cheese and meat boards.

Where to next?

This list only touches the surface. The best way to experience the independent scene in the Quarter is simply to pick a street you haven't walked down yet, look out for the old factory doors, and see who is open.
